Everything Changes

By on Tuesday 20th March, 2012

based on the song by Chilean composer Julio Numhauser of Quilapayún as famously sung by the Argentine songstress Mercedes Sosa

How the superficial changes
And so does the profound
The way of thinking changes
As does the very ground

The climate changes with the years
As the shepherd changes shears
And just as everything changes
That I’ve changed is not so strange

Oh everything changes…

As it’s passed from hand to hand
The pendant changes sheen
The bird changes its nest
And the lover changes feeling

The walker changes his stride
Even if it causes him pain
And just as everything changes
That I’ve changed is not so strange

Oh everything changes…

The sun changes in its course
As the night gives way
The plant puts on new clothes
When March gives way to May

The beast sheds its hide
As the old man sheds his mane
And just as everything changes
That I’ve changed is not so strange

Oh everything changes…

But my love doesn’t change
No matter how far away I am
Nor my memories nor my pain
For my people and my land

And what changed yesterday
Must surely change tomorrow
Just as I am changing
So far away from home

Oh everything changes…
