Here is to Life

By on Tuesday 20th March, 2012

Translation of “Gracias a la Vida” written by Violeta Parra as made famous by Mercedes Sosa. My own recording on Charango can be found on Soundcloud.

Here is to life for giving me so much
It gave me two eyes, when I open them up
I can tell apart the light from the dark
And way up high in the sky all the stars
And standing beside me the one I love

Here is to life for giving me so much
It’s given me hearing from night until morning
The sound of leaves rustling, birds singing, bees buzzing
Hammers hitting, dogs barking, motors whirring, rain pattering
The voice of my lover so tender and flattering

Here is to life for giving me so much
It’s given me a voice and the alphabet
With which to put words to the thoughts I beget
To my father, sister, mother and all the strangers I’ve met
And the name of that one I’ll never forget

Here is to life for giving me so much
It’s given great strength to my tired feet
To cover with speed both cities and fields
Mountains and deserts, forests, plains and the beach
Your house, your street and your balcony

Here is to life for giving me so much
It’s given me a heart that beats with such might
When I see the fruits of the human mind
When I see wrongdoing so far from what’s right
When I see into the depths of your clear, bright eyes

Here is to life for giving me so much
It’s given me laughter and it’s given me tears
With which I distinguish my hope from my fears
Two materials that make my song what it is
And the song of yours which is the same song
The song that I share with everyone

Here is to life for giving me so much…
