Pretty Houses of the Uptown

By on Tuesday 20th March, 2012

Original by Malvina Reynolds (1962) as made famous by Pete Seeger
Translated back into English from the Spanish version by Victor Jara

The pretty houses of the uptown
With railings round a front garden
A picturesque windy driveway
Awaiting a sportswagon

They come in green, and in sky blue
Pretty pink and in marble too
The pretty houses of the uptown
All factory-line from BnQ

And the pretty people of the uptown
Put a smile on, go round for tea
The yet together head down to Waitrose
And they’ve all had plastic surgery

They are lawyers and they are landlords
Land owners and dealing crooks
There are salesmen, qualified dentists
And they all wear designer suits

They play bridge, and drink margaritas
Drive their asses round in seven-seaters
And with other local yuppies
Take their children down to junior high

And so daddy’s little boy,
Now goes to university
Reading economics
And the art of throwing a party

He smokes his ciggies, in austin minis
He plays with guns and with politics
HE invades the middle east
And is a gangster of institution

Meanwhile the people of the uptown
Put a smile on, go round for tea
They get together, head down to marks and sparks
And thev’ve all brand new HDTV

They come in green, and in sky blue
Discount pink and in marble too
The pretty houses of the uptown
Ordered online from BnQ
