Sleep Little Slave Boy

By on Tuesday 20th March, 2012

Translation of Duerme Negrito, traditional Latin American, as performed by Victor Jara

Go to sleep little slave boy
‘Cuz you’re mama’s in the fields
My darling
Sleep now, sleep now little baby
‘Cuz you’re mama’s in the fields
My baby

She’s gonna bring juicy meat for you,
She’s gonna bring yummy sweets for you,
She’s gonna bring fresh fruit for you,
She’s gonna bring lots of treats for you…

And if baby doesn’t sleep
The white devil will come, and
HUM!!!
He’ll eat you’re little thumb
(yes he will, oh yes he will,
he will, oh yes he will, oh yes he will!)

Go to sleep little slave boy
‘Cuz you’re mama’s in the fields
My darling
Sleep now, sleep now little baby
‘Cuz you’re mama’s in the fields
My baby

She is working, she’s working really hard
She is working, and they don’t pay her at all
She is working, and she’s coughing really hard
She is working, for her baby oh so small
She is working, and she’s looting what she can
She is working, before her baby becomes a man
She is working, yeh, really hard
They don’t pay her, yeh, at all
She goes coughing, yeh, really hard
For her baby, yeh, oh so small
She is stealing, yeh, what she can
Before her baby, yeh, becomes a man
For her baby…

Go to sleep little slave boy
‘Cuz you’re mama’s in the fields
My darling
Sleep now, sleep now little baby
‘Cuz you’re mama’s in the fields
My baby
